Weekend Learning Islamic Studies Level 7 (Revised and Enlarged Edition)
The Level 7 book is intended for children ages 12–15 who have completed the Level 6 book from Weekend Learning or who have a similar knowledge base of Islam. All lessons are presented thematically in distinct units. Unit 1 focuses on the Creator and His religion. This unit answers questions about Allāh, Islam, faith, and the Qur'ān. As in other levels, the stories of some of the Messengers are discussed in Unit 2. A few other fascinating stories from the Qur'ān are presented in Unit 3. Unit 4 discusses the life and contributions of two companions who shaped the early history of Islam. Several diverse topics to enrich students' knowledge are discussed in Unit 5. Unit 6 describes several moral and ethical issues addressed in the Qur'ān. Proper adab and akhlaq learned from the Qur'ān is the best.

1 | Why Islam, What is Islam? | Students will be introduced to the beauty of Islam to help them understand that Islam is the chosen religion of Allāh (swt). They will learn that Islam is not just a religion to believe and follow, but it is a complete way of life. |
2 | Belief in Allāh | Belief in Allāh(swt) is the most important article of Muslim faith. This lesson explains the significance of the article of faith. This article of faith also teaches us many other principles associated with the concept of the oneness of Allāh(swt). This lesson also explains some of these principles. |
3 | The Qur'ān: Its Qualitative Names | The Qur'ān has many qualitative names. These names tell us specific things about the objectives of the Qur'ān. Students will learn the names for the Qur'ān in order to understand its objectives and to follow these objectives, so their daily lives can be more meaningful. |
4 | Istighfār: Seeking Forgiveness and Protection | Seeking forgiveness from Allāh(swt) is one important method for avoiding punishment. Students will learn from whom we need to seek forgiveness. They will also learn why we need to seek istighfār and why the messengers sought istighfār. |
5 | Allāh: Angry or Kind | Allāh(swt) is more kind than angry. His anger is reserved only for the sinners. However, if sinners repent and turn to Allāh (swt), He turns to them with forgiveness and shows kindness. Students will learn that the kindness of Allāh(swt) supersedes His anger. UNIT 2 | STORIES OF THE MESSENGERS | |
6 | Ādam (A): The Trial of the First Messenger | Students will learn the conversation that took place between Allāh(swt) and the angels before human beings were created. The angels submitted to mankind, but Iblīs refused. Students will learn how Iblīs tempted Ādam (A) and why he responded to the temptation. Ādam (A) subsequently prayed for forgiveness. Students will learn how the moral of the story can be applied to our daily lives. |
7 | The Life of Ibrāhīm (A): Beginning a Nation | In the second part of the history of Ibrāhīm (A), students will explore his adult life by learning from the Qur'ān and also from history. During this period, Ibrāhīm (A) was married, interacted with Lūt (A), traveled to and from Makkah and Egypt, and continued to establish Islamic monotheism. It is a story of struggle by a great prophet—a story that sheds light on his life and achievements. |
8 | The Sacrifice of Ibrāhīm (A) | After having a significant dream, Ibrāhīm (A) decided to sacrifice his beloved son Isma‘īl (A). His decision, and his son's readiness to give up his life, are examples of the greatest sacrifices in the history of mankind. The moral of this incident is highly appropriate for all generations. This lesson discusses how we can emulate the examples of Ibrāhīm (A) and Isma‘īl (A) in our own lives. |
9 | Lūt (A): A Message for Modern Societies | The history of Lūt (A) provides everlasting moral value. Students will learn the teachings of Lūt (A) and understand why Allāh(swt) punished his community. As our present societies overlook the moral downfall of people, the teachings of Lūt (A) appear more significant than ever. |
10 | Yūsuf (A): The Will to Overcome Temptation | The story of Yūsuf (A) shows his determination and courage to overcome temptation. This lesson describes the incident in ‘Azīz's house and explains what steps Yūsuf (A) took to overcome temptation. Students will also learn important moral guidance from the story. |

11 | The Companions of the Cave | The Companions of the Cave were followers of One God. In order to preserve their faith, they chose to isolate themselves in a cave. There were three reasons for seeking isolation. They brought three accusations against their own people. What happened after that is fascinating. This lesson describes the story of the Companions of the Cave as narrated in the Qur'ān. |
12 | Dhu al Qarnain: The Journey of a King | Students will learn about Dhu al-Qarnain, his activities, and his travels across different kingdoms. Wherever he traveled, he faced unique situations. This informative account shows the different dimensions of Dhu al-Qarnain's personality. |
13 | Effective Debate and Negotiation Styles in the Qur'ān | All past messengers communicated the message of Islam to their communities using brilliant dialogues and convincing arguments. Yet the leaders would not budge from their loyalty to their idols. This resulted in some intricate debates and negotiations between the leaders and the messengers. The Qur'ān presents some examples of these debates. This lesson delves into the details of some of the these negotiations. |

14 | Abū Sufyān: His Life and Achievements | Abū Sufyān was once an enemy of the Muslims, but then he accepted Islam. He fought many battles against the Muslims. The early history of Islam was largely shaped by his activities for and against Islam. This lesson provides a summary of his life and activities. |
15 | Khālid Ibn al-Walīd: The “Sword of Allāh” | Khālid Ibn Al-Walīd is known as one of the top army generals in the history of Islam. He began his career as an enemy of the Muslims, but later accepted Islam and helped propagate its message to distant places. Students will learn a brief summary of his life and achievements. |

16 | Character of the Messengers | All the messengers had common character traits. Students will analyze some of the common character attributes that distinguished the messengers. This lesson describes how these character traits can be emulated by all Muslims in their daily lives. |

18 | Lailatul Qadr: The Night of Majesty | The importance of Lailatul Qadr is enormous in terms of its blessings, its majesty, and its unique position in the history of Islam, particularly because the Qur'ān was revealed on this blessed night. Yet, we do not know for sure which night was the blessed night. This lesson provides a summary of why Lailatul Qadr is such a majestic night. |
19 | Fasting During Ramadan: The Month of Benefits | The significance of fasting during the month of Ramadan is enormous. It is not just a ritual but a systematic process to eliminate or minimize our shortcomings and help us emerge as purified human beings. This month is not only about abstaining from eating, but also abstaining from all forms of evil. This lesson discusses the importance and some of the blessings of fasting during Ramadan. |
20 | My Family is Muslim Now | A large number of non-Muslims in the West are choosing Islam. They are attracted to Islam for a variety of reasons. However, the new Muslims also face challenges. This lesson describes these experiences from the viewpoint of a new Muslim. |
21 | Science in the Qur'ān | The Qur'ān contains several fascinating scientific facts. People learned many of these scientific facts only after recent discoveries. The Qur'ān mentioned these facts more than 1,400 years ago. This lesson discusses some of the scientific facts mentioned in the Qur'ān. |
22 | Lessons From Past Civilizations | All past civilizations achieved their glory and then came to an end. Why were they destroyed? The Qur'ān asks us to travel the earth and see why these civilizations no longer exist. This lesson discusses some examples from history that provide moral guidance for people today. |

23 | Amr Bil Ma'ruf: Enjoin Good Deeds | Early Muslims were highly successful because they practiced amr bil ma‘rūf, that is, they encouraged each other to do good deeds. The objective of this lesson is to discuss enjoining good deeds and forbidding evil. Students will learn how they can encourage good deeds—first, by applying the concept to themselves. This lesson also discusses the benefits of enjoining good deeds. |
24 | Guard Your Tongue: Think Before You Speak | Speech can be both positive and negative. If we are not careful, misuse of the tongue can cause serious trouble. The purpose of this lesson is to identify different kinds of sins committed by the tongue, in the form of negative speech. The lesson also discusses ways to remedy such sins. |
25 | Islamic Greeting: Wishing Peace | The Islamic greeting of “Salam” is unique in many ways. Students will learn why salam carries more meaning than any other form of greeting. This greeting is appropriate for all people regardless of their age, gender, or religion. The example of Ibrāhīm (A) is included in order to encourage students to adopt this Islamic form of greeting. |
26 | How to Achieve Success | There is a difference between success in this world and success in the Hereafter. This lesson describes which types of success in this life will have lasting value, and which types of success all students of Islam should seek to attain. |
27 | Permitted and Prohibited | The food that we eat and the social behaviors that we adopt are either permitted or prohibited. This lesson discusses what is permitted and prohibited in Islam. It also provides a useful summary of actions to facilitate understanding and practice. |
28 | Types of Behavior Allāh Loves | Allāh(swt) provides guidance for human beings about the types of behavior that are ideal across all cultures, regions and time periods. This guidance is available in the Qur'ān. Some of the recommended behaviors are repeated in different sūrahs, and some are emphasized in strong terms. In this lesson, students will learn 21 specific behaviors that Allāh(swt) recommends. |
